The National Entrepreneurship
Study is a research initiative, intended to increase understanding
of the environmental factors that form barriers to, or enhance,
the climate for entrepreneurship.
Goal
Barriers to entrepreneurship can either be
mitigated by government policies, or alternatively, are sometimes
actually rooted in government policy. Therefore, increasing the
understanding of factors that are contributing to or impeding the
success of entrepreneurs will provide the basis for recommending
policy change to increase the success of entrepreneurs and economic
growth.
Strategy
The NES is an in-depth look at regional economic
growth and the experience of entrepreneurs in that region.
Phase One of NES, co-led by
Prof. Amar
Bhide of Columbia University and
IIM-Bangalore, was launched in June of 2003. Phase One will
include studies of Bangalore and a second region, yet to be determined.
In addition to becoming an important tool for policy development,
the findings of Phase One of NES, which will include over 100 case
studies of local entrepreneurs in each region, should serve other
purposes, including: contributing to academic research in entrepreneurship,
providing information for shaping funding agency programs, developing
non-profit organization strategy, and refining entrepreneurial development
education.
Watch this space for further information on the study and its
findings.
